THE PRICKLY PUHA CAFE

Be tempted by the rustic styled a la carte cuisine made with the regions finest produce. Push the boundaries of your imagination and relax with a touch of Provence inside The Prickly Puha Cafe & Restaurant. Located inside the Red Barn on Thornton Road - only a six minute drive from downtown Whakatane, or 4mins from the Airport and The Hub. Owner/Operators Rex and Aroha Anderson, have produced an exciting array of culinary delights for the past five years. The business now includes a dinner menu which  features classic dishes such as Coquille St Jacques, braised rabbit and truffle oil risotto and quick-seared venison with ratatouille.

Mr Anderson studied in Waikato before learning art nouveau cuisine in Europe. An award winning Chef, Mr Anderson had worked in some of the country's top restaurants before he decided to return home with his family to the Eastern Bay of Plenty. His philosophy behind cooking is to use classic recipes with unique twists.

saying one of the problems with many people starting out as chefs is that they only wanted to work with the finished product. "my philosophy is that you start at the sink and when things become tough you roll your sleeves up and help"

The Prickly Puha has continued to delight their "regulars" which encompasses the many travellers enroute between Auckland and Gisborne and has steadily grown to also include the family and friends who have accompanied them on many occaisions. Located at the front of the building is the beautiful new Rustic Arts Gift Gallery (previously located in Edgecumbe) which opened its doors in January 2007.Once inside you immediatey get this feeling of wanting to know "whats next" so you really need to checkout upstairs as well, as it just gets better n better. "People love the country location, with children always asking if there are animals so we show them the black and white sheep found at the Whakatane Homestay Leaburn Farm
situated behind us"

The Prickly Puha Cafe and Restaurant opens at 10am for brunch and lunch or simply classic home-baked cake and Atomic Coffee everyday, re-opening for dinner at 6pm on  (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and is one of only a few fully licensed cafe/restaurants in the area.
