More Information

The Wharf Shed Restaurant was formerly a quayside butter store. Produce from local farms was stored here to await transfer to coastal steamers for shipment to Tauranga and
Auckland. The original internal wood cladding remains a feature of the property. The walls are lined with cork, which provides great insulation year round. The present owners have maintained the buildings historic link to the sea in both the décor and within the restaurant’s award winning menus.

Seafood dishes are a feature of the restaurant. Due to the unique quayside location of the restaurant, our chefs are able to buy produce directly from local fishermen immediately the catch is landed. You cannot get fresher fish than that, unless you were able to catch it yourself!

Whilst the Wharf Shed’s Seafood Chowder and the Chef’s Fish of the Day are renowned, the restaurant is also the proud holder of the prestigious New Zealand Beef & Lamb Award for Excellence 2006. This award and our reputation for good wholesome fish meals makes the Wharf Shed a really great eatery.

The Wharf Shed Restaurant has achieved the highest culinary standard in beef and lamb 2006.

What the Judges said about our Lamb: “Praised by the assessors for the pleasing flavours and overall creativity. The lamb rump was perfectly cooked and complimented by the components. This was an attractively presented dish and sound example of culinary skill with all dish components carefully and successfully handled. Congratulations!”

What the Judges said about our beef: “Praised by the assessors for nicely cooked and trimmed, lean and flavoursome beef. Pleasing presentation and good use of textures overall. Well done.”

Pam Byrne, owner of the Wharf Shed, created the Berry White Island Dessert to celebrate the reopening of the restaurant following the flooding disaster of July 2004. The dessert contains: fruit, cream, Greek yoghurt and meringues. A trio of broken meringue pieces crowns the dish to represent the volcanic peak of White Island, which is situated off the coast of Whakatane, whilst berries are drizzled amongst the ingredients to replicate lava flows. This dessert was featured in the book, Food Wine & Art – The Journey Continues. The Wharf Shed Restaurant is the only restaurant from the Eastern Bay of Plenty to feature in this publication.

Wharf Shed gift vouchers make an ideal present to mark a birthday, anniversary or retirement gift. Perhaps you just want to show a little appreciation to someone for his or her kindness or assistance. What better way to do that than to give them with a night out at the Wharf Shed. Vouchers are available in denominations of $10.00 or $50.00 and can be combined to suit your budget.
