Around 50 Eastern Bay students are taking part in the 2015 Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) scheme this year, which is delivered by EBOP Chamber of Commerce. Students are currently preparing for their first big challenge of the year the Dragon’s Den, where the student companies will have five minutes to pitch their business ideas to a panel of local Dragons (judges).
Students from Whakatane High School & Opotiki College range from years 1113 have formed 4 teams who have set up their own business for a year. After setup, YES students then create real products or services, compile and implement a business plan and make real profit or loss. For all students, the business knowledge they develop is supplemented by skills in teamwork, communication, problem solving, negotiation, and decision making.
The Dragons' Den will be held on Monday 8th June and contributes 30 per cent to the team's mark in the regional competition that ends in October. One team will be selected to go on to the national competition in December. Teams will present their product or service, state their mission, explain market research and findings, product cost and expected sales. Each team has five minutes to convince judges why their company is good investment.
Regional Coordinator Jo Finlay says “In addition to gaining marks towards the yearlong competition, each team has the opportunity to win cash to assist their product/service. Extra cash can make a huge difference in what teams can achieve with their products or services. Locally we are extremely fortunate to have the support of some wonderful sponsors who have made this possible Hammertons Lawyers, EBOP Business and Leisure Show and Mann Print & Design.”
