Whakatane's growing Kiwi population was in the news recently with efforts by the Whakatane Kiwi Project increasing the local Kiwi population. The Kiwi Capital of the World has an increasing Kiwi population, using pest free Moutohora (Whale Island) as a nursery for young chicks to grow without the risk of being killed by pests.
