Whakatane adds 'Night Vision' to Kiwi Experience

Whakatane’s quest to be crowned Kiwi capital of the world has been given extra wings with the launch of Po Kiwi – New Zealand’s only night vision equipped wild Kiwi spotting experience.

Developed by local boutique tourism operator NATIVConnectioNZ, the experience takes place on the Kohi Point Scenic Reserve, an isolated pocket of native bush inhabited by a number of North Island Brown Kiwi currently being monitored by the Whakatane Kiwi Project.

NATIVconnectioNZ managing director William Stewart says the night time experience has a strong storytelling element fusing Maori legends, local traditions and professional grade night vision technology to create product boasting some very strong points of difference.

“It’s not just a Kiwi spotting experience. It is a very moving cultural experience too, where the histories of our people are recounted from one of our most historically significant pa sites and the home of our ancestor Toikairakau.

“The night vision gear really propels the experience to the next level. Like other fully wild kiwi spotting operations around the country, we can’t guarantee that you will see a Kiwi, but with the night vision gear we certainly give the chances a huge lift.”

A five per cent portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Whakatane Kiwi Trust in support and acknowledgment of their work.
