The Whakatāne/Ōhope Community Board, have put aside $2500 to fund potential ideas on reducing waste.
Whakatāne/Ōhope Community Board member Carolyn Hamill said, the initiative is to encourage local businesses to discover new ideas, and implement them, to reduce waste.
Hamill said, the community board is keen to hear waste-reduction ideas from local businesses.
The Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Coordinator (solid waste), Sheree Kearney, said the district is going well with waste reduction, compared to most parts of the country.
Kearney said, the Whakatāne community diverted more than 10,000 tonnes of waste a year from landfill, in 2019/20.
Hamill acknowledges, that a lot of small to medium-sized businesses are working hard to reduce their waste, but she said there’s always room to improve.
Businesses who are interested can apply on the Community Board website, with applications closing at the end of this month.
