Whakatane Heads is a right hand point river mouth break on a sand beach, located on the west side of the mouth to the Whakatane River. You need to paddle across the river mouth to get to the break. This is a top quality right hand break which is very popular, so know the rules and respect the locals. The wave is a fast and hollow, great performance wave with long rides. Suitable for advanced to expert surfers.

Directions: 
From Whakatane center, go east on The Strand, then at the round about turn right to continue on The Strand. Continue along Muriwai Drive down to the car park at the end. From heres its a paddle across the river mouth to the break


Coastlands, Whakatane is a beach break on a sand beach, located in the coastal area of Whakatane. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from with both right and left handers available. The wave is punchy and hollow and good fun. Suitable for all levels of surfers.

Directions: 
From Whakatane center, go west on Domain Road, then continue straight through the round about onto Landing Road. Turn right onto State Highway 30 over the Whakatane River, then take the first right onto Keepa Road, then right again onto Bunyan Road. head near the end of the road and make your way along one of the gravel roads down to the beach.


Ohope Beach is a nice local beach near Whakatane. Its a beach break on a grey sand beach. It is best at the west end of the beach where its gets a little more sheltered under the hill. There are many other peaks down the beach. Ohope Beach provides variable beach break conditions, depending on tide and sand movement and can have nice waves. Good for surfers of all levels. It is a popular beach in summer and has been voted NZs best beach!

Directions: 
From Whakatane center, go east on The Strand, then turn right onto George Street, then right again onto Hillcrest Road. Continue straigh on Hillcrest Road and onto Ohope Road, over the hill to Ohope. At Ohope Beach, turn left onto West End Road, and check out the west end of the beach, as it is usually the best.
