The surrounding regions of Whakatane are nearby and offer something special in their own unique way. Just over the hill is the beautiful Ohope Beach which has a small population catered for by a number of shops and services. Further East is the town of Opotiki which is fast becoming a popular tourist and relocation detination in its own right. Inland we have the towns Awakeri, Edgecumbe, Kawerau and Murupara. All these places are within minutes of each other and the surrounding farmland, beaches, lakes, rivers and bush.

AWAKERI NEW ZEALAND
Awakeri is a village located 10 minutes drive southwest of Whakatane.
Surrounded by large paddocks and forest scenery, Awakeri has an expanding farming and fruit growing community. The heart of Awakeri is just off the main state highway where you will find shops, Awakeri School and Awakeri Events Centre.
EDGECUMBE
Edgecumbe is a town in the Bay of Plenty of the North Island of New Zealand, 15 kilometres to the west of Whakatane and eight kilometres south of the Bay's coast. It is the main service town for the agricultural region surrounding the plains of the Rangitaiki River, which flows through the town. It has a population of approximately 1800.
The three main landmarks are the Fonterra dairy factory, the college and the Riverslea shopping mall.
The volcanic cone of Mount Edgecumbe (Putauaki), 15 kilometres to the south and close to the town of Kawerau, is visible from Edgecumbe.
OHOPE BEACH
Ohope Beach, voted New Zealand's most loved beach, is only 6km from Whakatane and offers the walker, bather, surfie or fisherman 11 kms of uninterrupted, white, Pacific beach sand.
Its north facing aspect gives you the full arc of plentiful sunshine. In excess of 2,250 hrs per year. Ohope Beach is nestled among the Pohutukawa tree with the offshore backdrop of volcanic islands Whakaari (White Island) and Motuhoroa (Whale Island). Only a few kilometers from Whakatane, this beach is one of the most safest surf beaches in the country.
OPOTIKI
Kia ora! Welcome to the Opotiki District.
The town of Opotiki is situated on a harbour inlet formed by the junction of two rivers. Bounded by these rivers on three sides, the Opotiki township comprises 309 hectares and the Opotiki District which extends from Ohiwa to Cape Runaway has a population of 9600.
