Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tane is the preserve of the mighty podocarp, ancient trees that once dominated the land and date back to the time of the dinosaurs. These magnificent trees combine with rushing rivers, fantastic ferns and bountiful bird life to create a fabulous forest capable of stimulating and satisfying every sense.
The Whirinaki Forest Mountain Bike Track is graded easy and suitable for medium fitness levels. The track is purpose built and weaves through one of the most spectacular and interesting forests in the world. The track is 16 km and can be completed in 2 - 4 hours. Shorter sections of the track can also be ridden.
The Moerangi Track is 35km and graded intermediate and suitable for a high fitness level.The track is 35km long. Situated along the track are three huts, Skips, Rogers and Moerangi.

About Whirinaki
Whirinaki is the preserve of the mighty podocarp, which are ancient trees that once dominated the land. The Podocarp date back to the time of the dinosaurs. These magnificent trees combine with rushing rivers, fantastic ferns and bountiful bird life to create a fabulous forest capable of stimulating and satisfying every sense.
The forest is special and part of it is under intensive management by the Department of Conservation. This area is known as the Whirinaki Ecological Management Zone (WEMZ) and the Mountain Bike Track goes through it. The management of WEMZ is holistic and includes work with rare plants and animals, improving visitor facilities and intensive pest control.
