Ohope Beach, voted New Zealand's most loved beach, is only 6km from Whakatane and offers the walker, bather, surfie or fisherman 11 kms of uninterrupted, white, Pacific beach sand.
Its north facing aspect gives you the full arc of plentiful sunshine. In excess of 2,250 hrs per year. Ohope Beach is nestled among the Pohutukawa tree with the offshore backdrop of volcanic islands Whakaari (White Island) and Motuhoroa (Whale Island). Only a few kilometers from Whakatane, this beach is one of the most safest surf beaches in the country.

Swimming is safe between the flags at Ohope beach and lifeguards are stationed at Mahy reserve at the bottom of Ohope hill, during weekends 25 November - 25 March and including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, News Years and the Day after. Mahy Reserve is a great place for picnics, with electric barbecues, tables, playground facilities and parking.

Ohope Beach has been voted as New Zealands Best Beach 2015! People were asked to vote for their favourite beach via a four week long Facebook campaign run by AA Traveller. Ohope took the title of Most Loved Beach with almost 100,000 votes. A Few years back Ohope Beach made the world top 10 beaches list with voters describing it as a beach wih golden white sands nestled amongst the Pohutukawa trees with the back drop of Whale Island and White Island at sea. It was the only NZ beach to make the list. Trip Advisor also puts Ohope Beach amongst NZs top 10 beaches.
