Whakaari Waiata
To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Whakaari White Island eruption, we invite you to join us for a remembrance concert at Ohope Beach Golf Links on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Experience an evening of music featuring Joel Shadbolt from LAB, the Kora Whānau, Maisey Rika, No Code, and many other talented artists.
The proceeds from the Whakaari Waiata concert will contribute to the establishment of a physical memorial to honour those affected by the tragic events that happened at Whakaari (White Island) on 9 December 2019. The memorial developed in partnership with the Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, and the Whakatāne District Council will be revealed in December to honor the lives lost, provide a place for reflection and respect and support in the the healing process.
This memorial will hold profound social, cultural, and heritage significance for all New Zealanders, commemorating a tragic event with global resonance. It will also serve as a meaningful tribute to the families directly affected and the local community that came together during and after the tragedy.
